The "Arbeit Macht Frei" sign hanging over the entrance to Auschwitz has been stolen. According to AFP, former Polish President Lech Walesa decried the theft of the sign and said he hoped it was only "a sick joke by scrap-metal thieves who didn’t know what they were doing."

Way to unload the de facto icon of your country’s entire tourist industry for a few zlotys. That sign was pretty much your Eiffel Tower. Seriously, wasn’t it just a few years ago that the Poles used their famous powers of sagacity to build a convent at Auschwitz. Do Poles not understand how much they stand to lose by alienating Jewish visitors who treat the trip to Auschwitz as a quasi-religious pilgrimage? What’s next? Pork-flavored tickets to the crematoria?
