The Best of 5767: Film
As you might’ve heard, the lunar calendar finished its cycle and the Jewish year 5767 became 5768. We considered fireworks and a night of pick-pocketing in Times Square, but instead we decided to use the opportunity to reflect upon the best the past year had to offer in the arts and culture. So, here’s the best in films of the lunar year 5767 from the loonies here at Heeb.
1. Superbad (Sony)
Seth (Jonah Hill) obsesses over a porn site membership. Evan (Michael Cera) swears up a storm on a bad cell phone connection. Fogell (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) scams a schtupp with his “McLovin” photo ID. But these slapstick antics only scratch the surface as to why Superbad will become an engrained piece of 2000s nostalgia. What distinguishes it from other teen sex comedies this decade is the way it captures the jaded know-it-all-ness of today’s suburban high schooler. While classics like Fast Times at Ridgemont High and The Last American Virgin captured teen repression at its most sexually naïve, Superbad is a profound snapshot of internet-languished, polymorphously perverse adolescence. BRIAN ABRAMS
The Best of the Rest:
2. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (20th Century Fox)
3. Casino Royale (Sony)
4. Knocked Up (Universal)
5. King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (Picturehouse)
6. Once (Fox Searchlight)
7. La Vie En Rose (Picturehouse)
8. Hot Fuzz (Universal)
9. Grindhouse (The Weinstein Company)
10. Eagle vs. Shark (Miramax)
